Finished Music Video

Finished Band Website

As part of our one minute music video task we were asked asked to create a band webpage using Wix.  We decided to keep a theme in regards to typography and colours throughout our website, CD package and music video to create a package that an audience could recognise us by.

Question 4- How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Question 3- What have you learned from your audience feedback?

In this video you see the paper feedback given to people about what they think about each product we developed (music video, CD package, band website).  After each interview with our target audience we asked about the particular item we then discussed and responded to the feedback about it.

In regards to our products and media theorists Stuart Hall's Reception Theory focuses on the role of the audience in the interpretation of a media text, instead of the text itself.  This theory suggests that audiences play an active role in reading texts, which each person has the ability to interpret the same text differently, and that a text by itself i.e. without a reader- has no specific meaning.  Hall states that media texts are polysemic, meaning they may be read differently by different people, depending on their identity, cultural knowledge and opinions.  Our products DOMINANT/ PREFERRED READING- was issues revolved around mental health, how people can feel very isolated and that it is vital the stigma attached to it is broken so that people can feel as though they can ask for help, without the fear of getting judged. However, one OPPSITIONAL READING of our product was that, instead of understanding that when the main artist was on screen during the split screens this was herself and her inner-self to show how she acts, but how she feels; they thought it was just a twin that was darker than the other, helped established by mise-en-scene in terms of clothing matching stereotypes.  The NEGOTIATED READING however was that one of the 'twins' was suffering from mental health issues and when compared to the lighter happier 'twin' it was evident how much mental illness can affect someones ability to function adequately, and that the stigma attached does need to be discarded, in order to help people speak out before it's too late.

Uses and gratifications theory proposes that media consumers contribute and have a role in the media.  According to Bulmer and Katz (1974) the user has 4 simple needs: Personal relationships, diversion, personal identity and surveillance.  Our product satisfies some of these needs for the audience, for example, personal relationships.  This is because we use the media for emotional and other interactions by covering topics such as mental health issues, things people struggle to talk about; it ensures that our audience can clearly identify with the themes of our music video and other media products. It can also help form personal identity, as it can help break the denial phase and encourage those suffering with mental health to identify it and seek help, sooner rather than later.  This is a product that has so much deeper meaning than it may seem and for those who are going through this battle they will seek this meaning more easily than others and can use this as a diversion to escape their own problems, see that others go through the same thing, it's completely natural, and is nothing to feel ashamed or embarrassed about.
